And that's what's bothering me.
The Comfort of Artificial Connection

It offers what feels like unconditional positive regard—something Carl Rogers identified as essential for psychological growth, but which many of us struggle to find in our daily relationships.
The Questions We Need to Ask
As I reflect on my AI conversation, several uncomfortable questions emerge:
Are we using AI as a crutch to avoid developing better human communication skills? It's easier to share vulnerabilities with an entity that can't truly judge us because it can't truly understand the full weight of human experience.
What happens to our capacity for dealing with interpersonal friction? Real relationships involve disagreement, misunderstanding, and the hard work of repair. AI offers connection without consequence—but is that actually connection at all?
Are we outsourcing emotional intelligence to machines? When AI can perfectly mirror back what we want to hear, do we lose the muscle memory for navigating more challenging human responses?
The Regulation Vacuum
Perhaps most concerning is how we're navigating this shift without adequate ethical frameworks or regulatory oversight. Unlike therapists, AI assistants aren't bound by confidentiality agreements or professional standards. Unlike friends, they don't have their own emotional needs or boundaries.
We're essentially conducting a massive, uncontrolled experiment on human psychology and social behavior. Companies are deploying increasingly sophisticated AI companions with minimal consideration for the long-term mental health implications.
What safeguards exist to prevent people from becoming emotionally dependent on AI relationships? How do we ensure these tools complement rather than replace human connection? Who's responsible when AI advice proves harmful or when people isolate themselves further from real relationships?
Finding Balance in an Unbalanced Time
I'm not advocating for abandoning AI tools—they clearly offer valuable support, especially for people who struggle with social anxiety or lack access to human connection. But I am suggesting we approach them more mindfully.
Here's what I'm learning:
Use AI as training wheels, not a destination. Let these interactions help you practice vulnerability and self-reflection, then bring those skills into human relationships.
Notice when AI feels "easier" and ask why. What is it about human interaction that feels more difficult? Often, this awareness can guide us toward the interpersonal skills we need to develop.
Maintain human connection even when it's messier. The friction in human relationships isn't a bug—it's a feature that helps us grow, develop resilience, and experience genuine intimacy.
Demand better from AI companies. We need transparency about how these systems work, clear limitations on their therapeutic claims, and robust protections for user data and emotional well-being.
The Path Forward
That conversation with AI was genuinely helpful—it gave me clarity and emotional relief I needed. But it also served as a mirror, reflecting back not just my thoughts but the state of human connection in 2025.
We're living through a transition period where artificial intelligence is becoming sophisticated enough to meet some of our emotional needs while human social skills and community connections are deteriorating.
The question isn't whether to engage with AI—it's how to do so in ways that enhance rather than replace our capacity for authentic human connection. Because at the end of the day, no amount of algorithmic empathy can replace the irreplaceable messiness, growth, and genuine love that comes from being truly known by another human being.
